14–16 August 2026, the Finnish Institute in the UK and Ireland will present the interactive installation as part of the Barbican’s Play Make Do festival.
Set in a public space, Basic Forms (of Urban Life) combines art and design to invite audiences to explore their environment intuitively. The work consists of a hundred geometric plywood pieces, whose colours are derived from details of the Barbican’s architecture and surrounding environment, and that continuously create new shapes and patterns through spontaneous encounters and intentional rearrangement.
The work’s first edition was part of the Concentrico-festival in 2024.
The work highlights the versatility of urban space and invites citizens to engage through play, social interaction, and creativity.
